Artwork by Joshua Guy
Out of Blue was the second EP by Phantom Isle and combined 90s electronica with industrial and techno. For this EP, I used it as a learning curve to hone my skill in music production and synthesiser sound design. The EP centred around the concept of loss and memorialised those who'd died in the 90s. Each track is named after a year someone had passed away, or there was a trauma event. Influences for this project included Bjork, Leftfield, The Future Sound of London, Machine Girl and Praga Kahn. I wanted to get inside a decade and explore it through sound. The equipment I had at the time echoed a lot of what 90s electronica and dance acts had at the start of that decade (polyphonic synthesisers, drum machines etc.), so I leant into the sound. Video games had also been a big part of growing up with the rest of the band members, so naturally, some of these influences came through.
ARTWORK
Out of Blue was my first foray into designing album art. The initial design is based on a PS1 game, but I later changed the design for the vinyl release to be more abstract, using Blender 3D software to create the artwork pictured above.
